I have recently discovered a verse in the bible that I have really taken to heart. Every time I look at my daughter I am reminded of this scripture. It says this:
For I hold you by your right hand—
I, the Lord your God.
And I say to you,
‘Don’t be afraid. I am here to help you.
I, the Lord your God.
And I say to you,
‘Don’t be afraid. I am here to help you.
Isaiah 41:13
WOW!! Amazing. Our God says that He is holding our hand, and saying "Don't be afraid. I am here to help you."
I've also recently noticed something about my daughter. First of all, she's learned to walk and so she is enjoying her new found freedom. But, what I've noticed is that sometimes I have to guide her by taking her by the hand and telling her to follow me. The funny part about this is she will follow me when I take her hand for a while, but as soon as she sees something that interests her, she is going after it, ripping her hand away and trying to go it alone. It's almost as though she is willing to take my hand as long as it is taking her the way she wants, but if I start moving from something she wants, she is quick to let go.
I can't help but think that our relationship with God is too often like this. "God, you tell me that you are here, holding my hand and helping me, but you know...I only want to let you do this if you are heading the direction that I want." The problem is, God sees the bigger picture and His taking us by the hand is saying "I know what lies ahead, and I want to help you" but we're too selfish to let that happen.
Children are, by nature, selfish. They have to be taught not to be. Even then, they still retain a good portion of selfishness. My daughter doesn't realize yet that my taking her hand and guiding is her is trying to help her from falling, from getting lost, or from getting hurt. She's too sucked into her world though to see this, and so when I deviate from the path she would choose, she rips away.
Sound familiar? God is trying to protect us. He calls us His children. In the same way that I don't want to see my daughter hurt, lost or see her fall; God doesn't want us hurt, lost or to see us fall. He wants to protect us.
He's calling out to you, "I hold you by your hand. Don't be afraid. I am here to help you."
