I am a worship leader in an SBC church in NC. And I am convinced that the downfall of the SBC will not be Johnny Hunt, Thom Rainer or any other big wig in the convention. It is going to be the actual church members themselves who bring their legalism and BS to the national level by bringing up superficial/legalistic motions to be voted on.
The SBC is going to hell in a hand basket faster than you can say, "See You At the Funeral!" and the church reps themselves are more interested in things like the following:
- Investigating Ed Stetzer (Lifeway Research), Alvin Reid and Danny Akin (Southeastern Seminary) because of their relationship with Mark Driscoll and his stance on alcohol.
- Banning Mark Dricolls books from Lifeway stores.
- Boycotting Pepsi because they advertise for Gay issues.
- Banning books from T.D. Jakes, John Hagee, Catholics and the ever so tantalizing "The Shack" from Lifeway stores.
- Saying we need to adopt the Christian Flag as a way to unite us as believers (where's the bible and our relationship with Jesus in all of this by the way?)
- Not allowing involvement with the SBC by people who drink alcohol or use inappropriate words.
- Making the KJV the official bible of the SBC (why don't we just step back about 400 something years)
- Asking the SBC to not use secular music in promo stuff.
- Denouncing our President (because of his declaration of June as Gay month, and all those other words).
I'm sorry people. This has to be, quite possibly, one of the most embarrassing SBC conventions ever.
What ticks me off even more is their obvious distaste for Mark Driscoll. What is that all about? A man who has one of the most successful church planting networks in the WORLD with the highest success rate. A man who has taken on Seattle WA and built up a church of over 8k people in a place that was said could not be reached.
What it sounds like to me is that the SBC is threatened by him because he's actually doing it right and we're not. It sounds like they are jealous as well.
I'm severely disappointed in the SBC and the direction it is heading as a whole. Just with in my association alone (40 something churches), I am sad to report that my church (and not because of anything I've done, or that we've done as a church) is possibly one of the healthiest churches of the 40. All the others are going straight down.
When are we going to wake up and say, "We must be doing something wrong for things to be going like this" instead of trying to blame it on the President, Mark Driscoll, or someone/something else.
What's even more interesting to me is that the SBC convention website doesn't even recognize the stupidity taking place right under their noses and in plain view. Call the out. Tell them how badly they are hurting the SBC by simply opening their mouths.
Instead of removing people from the convention because of their support of Mark Driscoll, we should remove people for being legalistic (which is considerably worse than supporting someone who, and rightuflly so, believes drinking alcohol to not be a biblical offense to God).
We need to pray for the SBC (and all of the ministers who have to put up with the insanity that we have to deal with every week at our own churches because of the deterioration we've allowed ourselves to fall into). We already have a huge black eye in the public view and have just about destroyed any hope for a witness we have had. And now, we look like we are trying to one up that black eye with a bigger, worse one.
5-10 years and the SBC will not exist if they continue down this path. Good luck!
